IS THIS REAL LIFE?
Waves like these only seem to come in our dreams. However there is that rare occasion where reality can overlap into our dreams, and our dreams can become a reality. You just have to notice the signals and be ready to go.
Here, Rusty Malkemes was prepared when the opportunity struck and began to ride that thin line between what is real and what is real good. Especially for a lake you cant surf on.
Sometimes you just have to wake up at 2am to meet your buds for a 4 hour drive for waves. Sometimes your surf straps snap on the highway going 70mph in 30knot+ winds. Sometimes nothing happens to the boards. Sometimes you show up and it looks smaller than expected. Sometimes it’s not. Sometimes, well most of the time, you have fun irregardless because there’s only four of you out. And you haven’t seen another soul all day. Sometimes you just have to go. Living in the now, fully commited.
We know you all have been getting some good surf…. As they say, with over 11,000 miles of coastline, the possibilities are endless.
The 2012 season has started off strong with a series of low pressure systems pushing some surprisingly good waves to shore.
We hate to keep bragging about the waves on the Southend of Lake Michigan but just can’t resist to share the score! Hopefully sparking an interest in others to find their own little piece of bliss on the big lake. Just don’t come here, you’ll get arrested.
Here is Brad Tunis sporting his infamous ice beard after a few hours in this stuff.
We’ve been getting some good consistent surf for the Southend of Lake Michigan recently. As promised, we will be adding more updates from the past swells on here soon! Since it’s been getting so good we’ve decided to share little by little and hold off on some new stuff for the next issue.
Here’s a moody image taken after a session of head-overhead waves today by Mike Killion. The surfer walking down the tracks is Jeremy Rumas, a great surfer and filmmaker. Be sure to check out his upcoming 16mm film titled “Hangs Upon Nothing” at the blog below. We cant wait for this flick to come out!
Gearing up here for another sizeable fall swell. It’s been a great start to the season. We’ll be posting more from the Bill Lemmons Memorial Contest soon as well as coverage from the incoming surf! For now, here’s a moment from in between heats at the contest this past weekend.
Had enough yet? We sure haven’t. We could stare at lake photos for hours. It’s so amazing to see the kind of waves we get sometimes on the lakes. And even more amazing to see so many people progressing on them. It’s looking to be an interesting winter and we couldn’t hope for more low pressure systems and cold temps. Despite putting on the thick gear it’s great to see the water shape up this time of year.
